REACH’s Community Builders Program
Good Times!
On Saturday August 6 2011, nearly 300 volunteers and 40+ businesses came together for the 22nd annual REACH Paint & Repair-a-thon! Check out pictures here!
This year, REACH revitalized homes in both North/ Northeast Portland and in Southeast; neighborhoods experiencing rapid gentrification, pricing many senior citizens out of their homes. To unite their efforts, over 45 businesses and volunteers joined REACH to kick-off the event at Colonel Summers Park then headed out to all corners of the City to make repairs on 11 homes.
Collectively, volunteers made 126 repairs. Everything from plumbing, electrical, carpentry, basic safety repairs, painting, and yard clean up. Special kudo’s to our teams who removed invasive blackberry bushes. With our volunteers help, the seniors we worked with will be able to stay safe in their homes. And it means a lot to the senior citizens to have volunteers providing a helping hand. We know homeowners like Mr. & Mrs. Pennington were extremely grateful for the beautiful new paint job on their home. A special shout to all of the “behind the scenes” volunteers who made the day go smoothly—on site registrars, lunch delivery teams, mobile outreach teams, photographers, and greeters.
The Community Builders Program is a free, neighborhood-based home repair delivery service sponsored by REACH Community Development, available to low-income senior and disabled homeowners throughout the City of Portland. “REACH is committed to helping Portland’s seniors be able to live safely in their homes,” says Dee Walsh, Executive Director. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with the local business community, who are dedicating a very generous amount of their time, resources, and employees to help our senior citizens stay safe in their homes.”
Support for this year’s Paint & Repair-a-thon event came from local business and civic partners, including major underwriting provided by all the sponsors listed below. A special shout out to our community partners the Portland Bureau of Housing, the Portland Bureau of Development Services, the Community Energy Project, Constructing Hope, the Minority Homeownership Assistance Council, and Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. Finally, special thanks to Milgard Windows for sponsoring all our advertising this year!
