Debbie Lowder

Resident Services Supervisor

About .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

I attended SUNY Purchase and CUNY Queens in New York, and studied Early Childhood Education and Alcohol and Drug Addiction at PCC. I began working at REACH when the Ritzdorf Court moved in their first residents in August 2000. Currently I supervise the Resident Services Program.  I have thoroughly enjoyed working for REACH and being an integral part of its evolution. When I am not working, I am enjoying being a mother of two boys, going out to listen to local bands, watching football, reading, and spending time outdoors.

I am passionate about the transformative power of education and believe in working together to build a healthy and just community.  I’m grateful for the opportunity to coordinate REACH’s financial empowerment programming, and do my best to make our programs fun, inspiring, and impactful.

My professional background is in community organizing and adult education. I have a BA in Sociology, Psychology, and Spanish from the University of Illinois and an MA in Adult Education from Portland State University.  When I’m not at REACH I can be found teaching GED classes at a local community college, baking bread, gardening, reading the newspaper, biking around town, and hiking and backpacking in Oregon’s beautiful wild places.

I love the time that I get to spend with groups of inspiring residents! During our workshops, the residents build their community, share their knowledge and practice skills to reach their goals. I’ve been with REACH since October 2007. Previously I spent seven years working with refugees in Portland, providing employment and cultural adaptation services. I most enjoy those aspects of my work which help build confidence and create connections. I speak Spanish. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Arizona State University, in Tempe, Arizona. Outside of work I read, play soccer, hike, bike and self-educate.

I strive to provide fun, educational, and empowering programming for youth and families in REACH housing.  I love the work that I get to do through our REACH programs like Youth$ave, the Summer Youth Program, and Budget, Buy, and Save.  I graduated from Grant High School in NE Portland and went on to study Political Science and Education Policy at Grinnell College in Iowa.  After college, I worked for an arts education non-profit in New York City before returning home to Portland to work at MESD Outdoor School.  When I am not working, I can usually be found enjoying a good book, singing and playing music, rooting for the Blazers, and spending time outside.

I Graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 2000.  I have been providing social services in the Portland area for 7 years and have been with REACH since 2006.

What I like about the work I do is being around elders with a vast amount of knowledge, wisdom and ideas. When I am not at work I enjoy spending time with my 3 dogs, watching the birds that gather around our bird feeders and playing with my three Grandsons when they visit.

About .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

After working for years in youth programs, domestic violence agencies, and schools, I am proud to be a part of the REACH team. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Oregon and a Masters in Social Work from Portland State University. As an AmeriCorps member in Seattle, WA I gained a true passion for social justice work and strive for social change in my daily life.

I enjoy my position at REACH because it allows me to play a versatile role in the lives of so many people. I enjoy helping residents meet their basic needs which includes eviction prevention services, assisting parents in providing opportunities for their children and maintaining the food closet, but believe that sustainable change comes with community building. Outside of work I’m a proud parent, love creating, reading, and staying busy as a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

I have been working in the field of human services since 2001 and my previous experience was primarily focused on serving people with addiction issues as well as involvement with the criminal justice system. I also spent 6 years as a program manager providing treatment and life skills training for individuals with both addiction and developmental disabilities. I have been with REACH since January 2010. I consider it an honor and privilege to serve the residents of this unique agency.

I earned a B.A in English Literature from the Western Washington University in 1990 as well as extensive training certificates in the fields of addiction and criminality.

I spent a few years teaching music to teenagers and really enjoyed the experience.  I also perform my own original music whenever possible and have been doing so since I was a teenager myself.

I have spent the last four years working with survivors of domestic violence, providing safety planning and housing resources, among other services. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, reading, movies, and a variety outdoor activities during the short Oregon summers.

About .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

I was born and raised in Louisiana. I attended the University of North Carolina for five years, and then moved west to Portland, Oregon. I have lived in Portland for approximately fifteen years, during this time my employment focused primarily on homeless individuals and assisting them in to permanent housing. This experience deeply enriched my life, as I cultivated many relationships, and was exposed to the numerous challenges individuals can face within our community. I am passionate about working with folks striving to strengthen their community, and am very proud to have gained employment with REACH. In my spare time, I love gardening, cycling, and sharing meals with friends
