At REACH, we believe the key to creating healthy communities is enabling all community members, especially those who are struggling with basic needs, to create their own triumphs each day. We work hand-in-hand with many partners throughout the community to achieve our goals. Some of those business partners are featured in these pages. You help to make our work possible – thank you.

Giving Back Fits With Values
The 2012 Paint & Repair-a-thon is going to be more impactful than ever. In honor of REACH’s 30th anniversary, we will be making repairs on 30 homes. IBEW Local 48 (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) and the Electrical Workers Minority Caucus (EWMC) are sending up to 50 electricians to make critical safety repairs on homes in N/NE Portland. We’re thrilled to have this new partner on our team.
Both the IBEW and the EWMC are going above and beyond to make this year’s Paint & Repair-a-thon our best ever. Our partnership stems from a 2010 workday with IBEW in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Electricians from across the country, in Portland for IBEW’s annual conference, volunteered their expertise for a variety of service projects around the city.
The IBEW Local 48 has been in existence for nearly one hundred years. The professional journeyman and apprentice electricians have worked in Portland and Vancouver, as well as surrounding cities. The EWMC grew out of the IBEW, and represents minorities in the trade. It’s been a strong advocate for equal rights, opportunities and greater minority representation in the IBEW. The EWMC has a strong commitment to the pursuit of social and economic justice for minority workers. It also provides education and training for its members. Donna Hammond, President of the EWMC, has helped spearhead this year’s efforts: “We want to give back. It felt like a good fit to partner with REACH. We can provide REACH with a good volunteer outlet and they can provide us with ‘circuit ready’ projects.” Thanks to Donna and all of the electricians at the IBEW and the EWMC. We’re looking forward to a great event and helping many of our neighbors in need!
