Cooper’s Big Idea

First grader, Cooper, commutes on the MAX every day to an aftercare program in downtown Portland.  Like all of us, he has been distressed seeing people sleeping outside on these cold, wet nights. At first, he thought they were just camping; but once he learned that they didn’t have a home, and that many of them were families and kids, like him, he wanted to help. Every year when Cooper creates his Christmas list, his parents ask him to think of ways he can support his community. This year, he decided to create an event to raise money to help address the homeless population in Portland, a cause he’s incredibly passionate about. He said, “Homeless people deserve homes. To make it a happy life.”

Cooper did lots of research on what non-profit he wanted to support. After reviewing his options, Cooper decided his fundraising would go to REACH Community Development.

Cooper quickly surpassed his original $100 goal, raising over $500 for REACH. When he counted the donations after the event and realized how much people had contributed, he stopped and said, “My idea kinda’ changed the world a little bit.”

On December 26th Cooper and his family came to REACH with his contribution.  Staff came to meet our youngest donor and share more about the impact his donation has for REACH and our residents. We are so thankful to Cooper for his efforts and dedication to giving back to his community!
